Hybrid and work-from-home attendance without the honour system
How to approve WFH days in advance, let people check in from home on those days only, and still keep an accurate record.
Hybrid work breaks most attendance systems. Either the office geofence blocks people working from home, or it is switched off for everyone and the office rule means nothing. The fix is to treat work-from-home as an approved state for a specific day.
A simple WFH policy
- Who is eligible (roles, after probation).
- How many WFH days a week or month.
- How far in advance to ask, and who approves.
- Core hours when people must be reachable.
How it should work day to day
- The employee requests WFH for specific dates from the app.
- HR or the manager approves.
- On those dates the employee checks in from home: the office geofence does not apply, but the location and selfie are still recorded.
- The attendance record is tagged WFH, so reports show who worked where.
On any other day, the normal office rules apply automatically - nobody has to remember to switch anything back.
Permanent remote and hybrid staff
For people who never come to the office, set their work mode to remote so the geofence never applies. For fixed hybrid patterns, approve recurring WFH requests rather than relaxing the rules.
What to report on
- WFH days per person per month against the policy.
- Late check-ins on WFH days compared with office days.
- Teams where WFH is concentrated on Mondays and Fridays.
